Be True to Your Soul
I can still recall that morning in the children’s hospital in Ho Chi Minh City after a terrible asthma attack. I was at the age of 7. Out of breathe and with sweat dripping all over my weak body, I lay holding my mother’s hands tightly crying
for God to take away the discomfort. I kept asking for her to pray for me to live. “I don’t want to die, I want to see my father again and I want to be famous.” My mother told me that it was not time for my spirit to leave the earth yet, that I have to have faith, and imagine that my father was with me. From that moment on, whatever I wanted, whatever I wished for, whatever I dreamed of, all came true. In late 1981, my mother, sisters, and I happily reunited with my father and 4 brothers after several failed attempts of escaping the Communist regime in Viet Nam. [in the pic to the right, tu-anh is on the far left. -ed.]
Wow! My life changed completely here in the United States. I created a whole new life as if I was just born. My design career sprouted at the age of 10. Due to struggles to make money and create a future for their children, my parents worked very hard, 2-3 jobs at a time. For about a year, my mother only came home once a week on her Sundays off to see us. I used to shop at yard sales and flea markets every Sunday after church, just to look for dresses and anything with frills, lace, ribbons, flowers, to help my mother sew dresses and clothing for my sisters and I since we could not afford to buy anything in the stores. Those years, K-Mart was considered to be fancy and high end shopping for us to go in.
By the time I reached high school, my closet was filled with my own creations from vintage stores, flea markets, yard sales, Goodwill, or Salvation Army. I loved taking something existing and re-creating it into something brand new and chic. I still remember a spicy red, polyester jersey gown I bought at the local Salvation Army for $1.50, and what a hit it was at a wedding I attended.
The second most difficult period years of my life, besides struggling to survive the post-war Viet Nam came after graduating from The Fashion Institute of Technology in 1994 until 2003. [above left pic is tu-anh at FIT in 1992. -ed.] Those years included several emotional imbalances of being fired of my first design job without any notice to being homeless for months; closing down of my first clothing design business; a serious, dramatic break-up with my fiance; endless draining and unprofitable trade shows; loved ones telling me to pursue a more practical career; and bartending nights along with a full-time job as a professional make-up artist, all the while struggling to support my dream “tu-anh accessories.” Along the journey to fulfill my passion for design and creation, the only thing that kept me going was the vision of where I am today-- creating, educating, refining and making a difference in my community. I could not be happier.
For aspiring designers out there--hold on to your vision, use your creativity and imagination to its fullest, understand your market, and get involved in communities outside your area of expertise. You can learn a lot of valuable skills and tools from these pursuits. Always be meeting new people and keep on building your relationships, know your work, and keep everything you create. You will one day need them as inspirations for your next collection. But most importantly, be true to your soul.
Presently, I am inspired by many influences-- a green environment, being around animals [especially Autumn, top, and Poeme, bottom, in the pic to the right! -ed.], working with children, keeping a healthy mind and spirit, books, art, beauty, movies and music. My mission is to create, educate, refine and harmonizing my community. I live to maintain a peaceful world full of love and happiness.

I'm glad to know about you, Tu-Anh.
I was living in the DC area for 24 years and just moved to Miami after that. But I'm also one of the boat people from Viet Nam. I came to the U.S. at the age of 12 and without my parent so it was tough.
I'm so glad to see you are doing well and working hard to get to where you wanted to be.
Very inspirational.
There is no excuse, but just facts.
And the latest fact is that you didn't give up to get here.
Please contact me at apollogt@apollomalemodels.com to discuss a possible interview with my magazine, Apollo Male Models Magazine.

Very inspirational story!
I know a little more about Tu Anh's background and I don't think she gives herself the credit she is due! She could write a book about the challenges and adversity she has overcome. I believe that her creative spirit and unwillingness to accept defeat or make excuses is why she has succeeded today. Not to mention that her fashions are amazing and her support for Goodwill commendable. If she's willing to support Goodwill Stores, the stuff must be pretty darn good!
Tu-Anh: Yours is a remarkable story, and you are to be congratulated on your many achievements! By sharing your story, you are an inspiration to others. Goodwill is fortunate to have you as its "fashionista" and advisor!

I applaud your courage, faith and determination to overcome your struggles of the past. You are a great inspiration to everyone that one can aspire and achieve one’s goal by believing in him or herself. Your collaboration with Goodwill in producing such a high-end fashion show was amazing and proves that buying and wearing Goodwill clothes makes one looks and feels like a movie star.

You don't get through life without helping others and Tu-Anh has been doing that with her students and everyone she meets. She embraces new project and makes everything a success. I love the show. Well done! Continue.
Very inspirational!
It inspires me to know that you are a very successful person even though you went through such tragic struggles growing up. It didn't stop you from achieving your goals and helping others to make their life even better. You are great at what you do, inspiring many students, and always caring for what's always important- family.
Tu-Anh,
You are a true inspiration. Where you have been, where you currently are, and where you are going--can give us all the motivation to accomplish our dreams...and You are so incredibly talented!!!...Look out world!!! Just knowing how many lives you have already made difference with breath-taking!!!
Tu-Anh is my aunt and I am blessed to have been able to grow up and watch her dream come true. I remember as a kid helping her out when the business was much smaller, and now it has grown into something so much bigger. I am honored to have such an amazing aunt who not only reaches for her goals, but makes sure her family is along with it. We couldn't be more proud of her. Her successes help push myself to reach my dreams, and I can only hope I am able to do it with the great determination and faith as she has.
A truly inspirational story. If what goes around comes around then Tuanh will be mighty successful in the eyes of her peers. I hope there is lots more to come. Best of luck, you deserve it.
The Challenges you had to overcome, are what made you who you are now. This is something that sadly is becoming extinct in todays America. Kids today are being raised with a sense of entitlement and have no idea what it means to sacrafice. So "Good for you Tu-Anh" and I hope that your story will inspire all of those who read it.
wow...what a touching story. i really makes you believe in dreams coming true. thanks Tu-Anh for sharing your story and inspiring others as well!
Impressive results from the work and time put into producing the fashion show. I had the same preconceptions about Goodwill clothes as those voiced in the video but after watching the online show, I have a renewed impression and expectation of what gems can be found in these stores.
Excellent job everyone!
TuAnh,
You are an inspiration to all the people that have immigrated to the U.S. and struggled to survive to make ends meet. You followed your dreams, inspired others, and a great inspiration to us all. You are so talented and the sky is your limit. There is nothing you can't do. You are an example of an "American Dream".
I've always thought of Tu-Anh as a great inspiration and good influence. This may also appply to others who have met and worked with her as well. It's great to know someone who has come so far and has had great success throughout her career. Not only that but she also gives back to the community!
